POSITION TITLE:             Parks & Recreation Intern           

DEPARTMENT:                Parks & Recreation 

REPORTS TO:                   Parks & Recreation Director 

CLASSIFICATION:            Hourly; Temporary; Hours Variable 
 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Parks & Recreation Department Intern reports to the Parks & Recreation Director, but may receive direction and guidance from Recreation Program Supervisor and other department staff.  Will be responsible to participate in various activities and assist at multiple facilities.   The Parks & Recreation Department Intern is expected to be motivated and willing to learn about the many varied aspects of the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department. The Parks and Recreation Intern is expected to act in a professional manner at all times and be flexible in his/her hours of service. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Supervisor in the planning details of special events and Program needs. 
  • Participants at various special events, including, but not limited to:  races, concerts, movie nights, character nights and provides operational support, crowd control, public relations and working with other employees to provide set-up, operation, clean up and safety for all events.
  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Program Supervisor in filling gaps in staff for the pool, lake, admissions, day camp and office needs. 
  • Assists Parks and Recreation Director and Recreation Program Supervisor in the operation of youth and adult sports leagues and programs including, but not limited to assisting league operations, player evaluations, coaches’ background checks, registration records, meeting agendas, press releases, contacting participants and conducting surveys. 
  • Performs record keeping duties; game results, standings, rainout rescheduling, umpire scheduling, and all participant/roster data.
  • Inventory, prepare, and transport the variety of recreation related supplies, materials, and equipment for various sports and other recreation activities.   
  • Administers emergency response and first aid if needed. Properly documents all accidents and notifies supervisor.

 

 

EDUCATION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently majoring in Parks and Recreation or a related field.  
  • Must have completed 2 full years of college by the time the internship commences.  
  • Must have or be willing to obtain First Aid and CPR/AED certification. 
  • Excellent communications skills.    

 

 

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, bend, occasionally drive a vehicle, use hand to finger coordination, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.  Ability to move about facilities and walk on unpaved, sloped, and uneven terrain. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and conditions. The employee may need to lift and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus and read various documents.

POSITION TITLE:              Recreation Supervisor

DEPARTMENT:                  Parks & Recreation Department

DIRECT REPORT:             Director of Parks & Recreation

SUPERVISOR UNION:      40 hours per week

 

JOB SUMMARY:
Develops, coordinates, implements and supervises community recreational and park programs.  Advises the Director of Parks and Recreation in the planning of departmental programs and activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development and management of town recreational programs according to a planned schedule
  • Shall direct, manage and supervise town aquatic programs and facilities including the hiring and supervision of seasonal staff
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures: be responsible for the enforcement and management of assigned programs 
  • Develop schedules and special events and prepares public relation materials to support such programs
  • Reserves athletic fields and indoor spaces as required through coordination with school personnel and other town agencies
  • Assists Director in Budget preparation and recommends fee schedules and expenditures in accounts for assigned programs
  • Researches opportunities for external funding of programs from Non Governmental Organizations, foundations and grants. May administer grants as approved by Director
  • In coordination with the Director of Parks and Recreation develop marketing strategies and techniques to support and develop programs 

 

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Considerable knowledge and skill in executing and administration of the principles and practices of recreation and aquatic programming

  • Knowledge of design, layout, care and maintenance of recreational and aquatic areas 

  • Ability to identify customer needs and assist in the design and development of programs to meet these needs
  • Knowledge of management, marketing, sales, and effective communication practices and techniques
  • Proficiency in using Windows based computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software 
  • Basic understanding of Website fundamentals and navigation  
  • Ability to prepare and coordinate marketing and promotional materials
  • Ability to work with the Director to develop effective presentations for individuals and groups
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written directions 
  • Ability to maintain complex records and databases and to prepare reports from same
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with potential customers, program participants, associates and the general public.  
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interface and problem-solve with the public
  • Must be a self-starter
  • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate employees
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties, the employee is required to stand, walk, and sit.  Must have the ability to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Must be in good physical fitness, strength and stamina to perform required duties, and are expected to maintain such physical fitness to be able to perform the duties.

The employee must be able to lift and or move up to 75 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  These requirements can be satisfied with appropriate prescription glasses/lenses.

 

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

The candidate should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, Leisure Services Management, Public Administration or a closely related field with at least three (3) years experience in community recreation, park programming or a closely related field.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
 
CPR, First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or equivalent certifications, Valid CT Driver’s license


POSITION TITLE:                     Elderly Services Coordinator-Part Time 

DEPARTMENT:                       Social Services/Senior Center

REPORTS TO:                          Director of Social Services/Senior Center

CLASSIFICATION:                   Clerical Union - 25 hours per week
SALARY RANGE:                     $20.00 - $22.00 per hour

 

Job Summary:  

Provides case management to Monroe residents age 60 and older. Visitation to elderly clients.  Assist with energy assistance programs, and other senior programs.  Maintain databases and statistical information.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides case management for individuals age 60 and older who reside in the Town of Monroe.  This will include visitation to isolated elderly in Monroe  
  • Prepare applications for energy assistance, for ABCD program 
  • Assist with other programs (i.e. Yankee Gas, and CL&P)  
  • Review residents’ status for renter rebates, in conjunction with Tax Assessor’s office
  • Serve as a referral source for residents in regards to:  employment, crisis intervention, abuse or neglect, Medicaid and other insurance benefits.  
  • Insurance counseling regarding Medicare Part D, Medigap, Social Security and ConnPACE 
  • Maintain emergency evacuation database for Monroe residents who are homebound  
  • Make referrals to appropriate programs such as RYOK  

 

Competencies/Skills:

  • Must be able to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and support agencies 
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
  • Must possess a valid CT. State Driver’s license
  • Must be able to interact and work in a cohesive team environment
  • Ability to read and interpret policies, rules, safety regulations
  • Communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to understand verbal and/or written instructions and follow them as directed

 

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in human services field (i.e. Social Work, Psychology) from an accredited college or university
  • Two-three years of experience working in elderly community
  • Trained CHOICES counselor

POSITION TITLE:             Seasonal Highway Maintainer    

DEPARTMENT:                 Public Works

CLASSIFICATION:           Hourly; Temporary; Unaffiliated; Flexible Hours 


JOB SUMMARY:

Manual work supporting the maintenance of various aspects of the Town’s infrastructure, public facilities and grounds; all other related work, as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLILITIES:

•    Assists in maintenance repair of roadway system including but not limited to road surface, shoulder maintenance, drainage maintenance, street sign replacement or repair, trimming/mowing, litter removal and vegetation control.

•    Assists in maintenance on Town facilities including landscaping.

•    Performs preventive and general equipment repair and other general maintenance tasks.

•    Performs other related duties in the Department of Public Works as assigned.

•    Complies with all safety regulations and procedures. 


EDUCATION/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

•    Minimum of 18 years of age.

•    Some mechanical knowledge preferred.

•    Highly self-motivated and goal oriented.

•    Ability to function as part of a team to accomplish goals. 

•    Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

•    Must possess a Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
